Legend has it that Cleopatra, Queen of Ancient Egypt, took baths in donkey milk to preserve the youth and softness of her skin. It is also said that it took no less than milk from 700 donkeys to fill the royal bathtub. This beauty tip has survived to this day and donkey milk soaps are a well established natural cosmetics product.A young couple from the island of Skiathos has decided to make their mark. Their difference from other soap makers is that their product is completely hand-made, from start to finish.
“We breed our own donkeys, we milk them and choose the aromatic herbs we put in the soap. We even produce the olive-oil with which we enrich it,” says Agni Mavridou, who owns the farm together with her partner in life and business. Producing the soap is difficult because it demands large quantities of milk. Every month, the farm needs 25 litre of donkey milk and makes 1,000 soaps. “We would like to expand, and we are working on it. The truth is that donkey milk alone is precious, since it is sold €30-€50 per liter. That alone can keep you going” Mavridou concludes.
