It has been a few years now that Greek companies have been exporting abroad, exploring their options in relation to Australia. Between 2008 and 2012, bilateral trade grew by 60% and nearly tripled in volume (€111 million in 2012). Imports from Australia totaled €24 million, while goods exported were worth €126 million. Major exports to a country which has a large diaspora (Greece's 70th largest trading partner), include olives, medicaments, vegetables, aluminium and rubber articles.
Besides the food industry, potential in exports has been identified in fields such as biotechnology, nanotechnology and ICT. Boosting exports to Australia is not the only target. Increasing tourism from Australia is another goal, as Australians account for only 1% of total tourist influx to Greece (129,112 in 2013).
