Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Venizelos’ addressed the Plenary of the 69th UN General Assembly on September 27. Venizelos stressed that Greece remains fully dedicated to the goals of the United Nations Organization and its universal ideals.

As regards the crisis in the Middle East, he noted that Greece welcomes “the adoption, in Egypt, of the 26 August Israeli-Palestinian Ceasefire Agreement, and hopes to pave the way to re-launching the political process aimed at durable peace.

On the name issue of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Venizelos reiterated that “Greece fully respects the process directed by the UN Secretary General (…) , and always participates constructively and with good will.(…) . We propose a mutually acceptable compound name [with a geographical qualifier before the word ‘Macedonia’] for all uses and purposes - erga omnes.” He also added that Greece supports the European and Euroatlantic perspective of this neighboring country and has long been among the top foreign direct investors there.

On the Cyprus issue, Venizelos underlined that "Greece fully supports the dialogue between the leaders of the two communities, within the framework of the February 2014 joint communiquĂ©, and President Anastasiades’ initiatives for confidence-building measures that can create new momentum on the island."

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Evangelos Venizelos chaired an informal council of Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) Foreign ministers held on the sidelines of the 69th UN General Assembly on September 25.

The agenda focused on ways to deepen and promote synergies between the BSEC and European Union to promote growth and development, one of the goals of the Greek presidency. During the meeting, the participants from the 12 BSEC member-states outlined their views and proposals for improving the organisation's functioning and efficiency as a regional agency for economic cooperation around the Black Sea.
