The famous and delicious cherry-tomato of Santorini island "Tomataki Santorinis" has been granted Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and protected geographical indication (PGI) status by the European Union.
This small tomato, produced on the islands of Thira (Santorini), Thirasia, Palea Kameni, Nea Kameni, Aspro (Aspronisi), Christiani & Askania in the Prefecture of the Cyclades in the South Aegean Region, owes its unique aroma and flavor to the volcanic soil and a very specific microclimate of the area. The earliest reliable evidence of tomato cultivation in Santorini dates from the end of the 19th century and records it as starting in the 1870s. As the Commission notes” ‘Tomataki Santorinis’ is a striking example of a highly-prized local product of excellent quality whose production involves the sustainable use of unique natural resources.See also: Ministry of Rural Development and Food - List of the Greek PDO and PGI products and Specifications
