The fossilized tree trunks located in three areas on the island of Lemnos, known as the Petrified Forest, are to be given official protection as a Natural Monument, was decreed by the Secretariat General of the Aegean and Island Policy. The decree defines the island's Petrified Forest as "a unique creation of nature and the country's heritage, with rare paleontological and geomorphological value" and protects each individual fossilized trunk or segment, as well as other fossilized plant parts, such as roots, nuts and seeds.
As the Petrified Forest of Lesvos is the most famous, many people may completely ignore the fact that Limnos as well, hosts a Petrified Forest. Before 23 – 18,000,000 years, its surface was covered by dense forests of palms, pine-trees and huge coast redwoods, which were buried under the lava. Their greatest part is situated in Moudros and in the wider area of eastern Lemnos, while important vegetable fossils were found in the village Varos and in the area of Thermae, in Mantra Katramados.
