The pipeline will carry natural gas from the region of the Caspian Sea via Greece, Albania and the Adriatic Sea to Southern Italy and further on to Western Europe. The project aims at enhancing the security of the region's supply, as well as the diversification of natural gas routes to the European markets.

Thus, TAP will establish the so-called South Natural Gas Corridor to Europe and will create a new route to the natural gas market from the Caspian Sea.
