An amateur winemaker in the city of Larissa has produced the first wine-based Greek "whiskey". Argyris Taramonlis, a retired army colonel, has been producing wine in his spare time for his family and friends for many years.
In his efforts to come-up with a suitable use for each year’s leftover wine, he decided to experiment with distilling, and after years of experimenting, searching for the perfect barrel and turning his basement into a whiskey lab, in 2012 he produced the first 50 kg of a whiskey-type liquor.
For its production, he used triple-distilled alcohol made by xinomavro wine, French oak barrels and water from the Zagori source, famous for its quality.
The first samples were met with enthusiasm by local connoisseurs, and now the retired colonel is planning to quadruple his production.Who knows, in a couple of years,he might become the first Greek whiskey producer!
