The city of Athens welcomes the opening of the first industrial museum on January 27.

The Industrial Gas Museum, located in the heart of the capital, within the Technopolis Art complex, in the so-called Gazi district, aims at acquainting the visitor with the history and technology of the old gas works in Athens. The Athenian factory of the French Gas Company was founded in 1857.

King Otto decreed its establishment and the Municipal Council of Athens  unanimously decided for its foundation. The decree granted Fragiskos Feraldis the right to set-up a gas factory which would serve the needs of city lighting; thus, the central location of the industrial complex was of huge importance.

In the 1960s, the factory fell into disuse, as the type of energy it produced was considered obsolete, and eventually, in 1983, gas production from coal was discontinued. Today, the “Gazi” site, as it widely known among Athenians, is a living museum of industrial archaeology and architecture of the 19th century, as well as a source of inspiration for various branches of science and art.

Walking along a specially-designed path and with the help of original objects and equipment, rich photographic material, audio documents and video, the visitor will have the opportunity to observe plant facilities, follow the stages of the production line and discover a hitherto forgotten part of the history of Athens.
