The coastal town of Ierapetra in Lasithi on Crete island received the prestigious golden QualityCoast Award 2012.

It was awarded by the Coastal and Marine Union (EUCC) on May 18, during a special ceremony held at Torres Verdas in Portugal.The  QualityCoast Jury presented the gold award to Ierapetra for its efforts to achieve good standards in sustainable tourism and for excellence in  Environment, Identity and Socio-Economics.

During the next 24 months, Ierapetra has the right to display the QualityCoast Flag and the Gold Award Banner throughout its territory. In the QualityCoast Regions Top 10 list, Ierapetra was in second place after Azores.

In addition, the QualityCoast Destinations Top 100 list included Samothraki and Alonissos in the 7th place and 17th place respectively.

QualityCoast is the largest international certification programme for sustainable tourism destinations, aiming to establish a worldwide network of coastal communities that share values on sustainable development, nature and biodiversity, cultural heritage and identity.
