Social Theatre Shop

Based on the firm belief that theatre is part of the social tissue and must be in the centre of a community’s life, the National Theatre of Northern Greece (NTNG) has launched its Social Theatre Shop project.

For six classic repertoire productions on show until May 6, Thessaloniki’s main theatre asks theatre-goers to pay for their tickets not with money but with food. The food collected is then distributed by the NTNG staff to charities and welfare organisations in the city.

The Social Theatre Shop is an initiative of NTNG actors, endorsed by the theater’s management. Through the Social Theatre Shop initiative, the NTNG staff, who are working pro bono for all project productions, wanted to send a message of solidarity to everyone in their community: the theatre is a place to be together.
  • We Can!
A well-known paradox of the crisis is that, while citizens are struggling to make ends meet, tons of good food are being thrown away everyday by restaurants, hotels, and other food market points.

Seeking to fight food waste and make good use of surplus food, citizens of Athens have created Boroume (meaning We Can in Greek). Boroume -Saving Food, Saving Lives coordinates the daily donation of surplus food from the food and restaurant industry to orphanages, old age homes and other welfare institutions. In addition, it helps companies wishing to donate food to welfare institutions as part of CSR actions. Up to now 500 food businesses in Athens, including 25 hotels, are part of Boroume network.
