A food waste drying apparatus designed by the Laboratory of Environmental Science and Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens can drastically decrease the amount of urban sewage. It resembles a simple ceramic kettle, with a capacity of up to 6 kg of organic refuse, and can be powered by a domestic plug. For the past 6 months, it has been tested in 20 homes with very encouraging results.

As users claim, the garbage dryer has made their lives easier: it reduces all food waste to dry, odourless matter, which does not need to be disposed of daily. The  device is a 100% Greek patent and has attracted international interest, as well as EU funding.Compared to the average garbage composter, it is much more user-friendly, and its mass production will hopefully help minimize the amount of waste generated, as it reduces the volume of garbage up to 90% or even more.
