Government Vice-President and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos was elected as new PASOK party leader, following an inner-party election held yesterday throughout Greece. In a televised message, Venizelos described the election -in which more than 200,000 members and friends of PASOK participated- as "a successful exercise in political readiness," pledging that "a relationship of trust has been re-established today for a new party beginning." 

Venizelos is now expected to tender his resignation as Finance Minister during the next few days in order to lead the party in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
