The contribution of Greek commerce in the development of 18th and 19th century Hungary was the focus of a symposium held in Budapest on September 18.
Titled The role of Greek Merchants in the "bourgeoisisation" of Hungary, the symposium was organized by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Association of Greeks in Hungary and the Research Institute of Greeks in Hungary, and was attended by Greek and Hungarian academics.
The event commemorated the 200th birthday anniversary of Greek benefactor Baron Simon Sinas, who had been the main sponsor of the Academies of both Athens and Budapest and the chief financer of the famous Chain Bridge of Budapest. The annual award in his name, established by the Academy and the Institute, was bestowed during the symposium.
