The School Buildings Organisation -of the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning, and Religious Affairs- is currently designing the new, eco-friendly state schools, which will gradually begin to sprout up around the country. The extensive programme for the construction of bioclimatic school buildings began in 2007, and has gained new impetus with the inflow of EU funds. The plans include the upgrading of older schools into energy-efficient buildings and the building of new structures. The new green school will make use of passive solar technologies such as natural cooling, earth sheltering and solar chimneys; it will use renewable energy sources such as tanks for rainwater collection and irrigation, automatic faucets, and photovoltaics. Green schools are currently being built in Tripoli, Kalamata, Ilia, Crete and Thessaloniki.
