Despite a crisis in education that has seen hundreds of educational institutions struggling amid budget cuts and staff shortages, six Greek universities have made it onto the QS World University Rankings 2015/2016, an annual league table of top universities in the world and one of the best-known and respected rankings of its kind.
More specifically, the National Technical University (NTUA) ranked 376th, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki ranked 461-470th, University of Crete 501-550, National and Kapodistrian University and the University of Patras were both placed between the 601st and the 650th position.
Furthermore, NTUA ranked 67th among the world’s top 100 engineering and technology faculties, while the Athens University of Economics and Business ranked 193rd among 200 in the Social Sciences and Management faculty area. However, "Greece is currently in a prolonged period of systemic cuts to its higher education sector, with plans to reduce the number of higher education institutions from 520 to 350.
This has led to a Greek ‘brain drain’ […] The overall effect seems to be reduced international recognition of Greek universities, amongst academics and employers alike", Kathimerini newspaper quotes the report.
