The annual pistachio festival taking place on the island of Aegina, famous for producing high-quality pistachio nuts (fistiki in Greek), is about to be held for the seventh successive year. The Aegina Fistiki Festival is the largest commercial and economic event in the region. More than 20,000 visitors attend the festival’s pistachio trade fair, which promotes the product and its cultivation, and showcases its nutritional qualities along with the considerable range of gastronomic delights and artistic creations.
Since 1996, this unique product boasts an EU PDO label (Protected Designation of Origin); the cultivation and trade of the island’s pistachio had however served as the locomotive for the local economy since the interwar years. The Aegina pistachio (Fistiki Aeginis) has evolved into a sought after commodity, as it lends its unique taste and texture to countless gastronomic creations, sweet or savoury. The Festival takes place from September 24 to 27 and includes a variety of activities, ranging from food tasting to educational programmes for children and guided tours to the island’s attractions. Visitors also get the opportunity to taste local traditional products, and experience local culture and folklore, whilst well known chefs visit the Fistiki Fest every year to present new creations.
