The annual Armata Festival kicks off today (September 7) on the island of Spetses and will run until September 13. A major event associated not only with Spetses but with the entire country, the festival commemorates the victory of the naval forces of Spetses against the Ottoman fleet on September 8, 1822, a decisive moment for the Greek War of Independence.
This year’s celebrations will culminate on Saturday 12, with the reenactment of the naval battle that includes the setting on fire of a model of the Turkish flagship, followed by fireworks, amidst a fleet of yachts which arrive every year to Spetses for the event.
