Greek scientists are members of a major scientific team, led by British researchers at the Institute of Cancer Research in London that uncovered two new genetic risk factors for breast cancer, thus improving our understanding of breast cancer genetics and personal profiling of the disease.

Drakoulis Giannoukakos from the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory of Demokritos in Athens, Helen Perrakis from the Institute of Cancer Research in London and Kyriaki Michailidou from the Centre for Cancer Genetics Epidemiology in Cambridge took part in the study that was published in the journal Human Molecular Genetics. The project analyzed the DNA of some 86,000 women of European ancestry, 12,000 of Asian, and 2,000 of African ancestry, half of which had breast cancer.
