Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas expressed his gratitude to the Greek government for its vote in favour of granting Palestine a non-member observer State status in the UN General Assembly session of November 29. The resolution was adopted by an overwhelming majority of 138 votes in favour, 9 against and 41 abstentions in the 193 member-state Assembly.
According to an announcement of the Diplomatic Representation of Palestine to Greece issued on the same day, this decision consolidates "Greece's status in the Arab world and internationally as a steadfast and strong voice in favour of international legality [...] We thank Greece and the Greek people, who once again stood by our people, at their just struggle. We also thank the Greek political parties that supported our petition. With this decision, Greece aligned itself with the moral majority of the international community that took a stand against wars and occupation and in favour of freedom and peace."
