A delegation of the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee (LIBE) visited Greece on October 31, and was briefed by Public Order Minister Nikolaos Dendias on migration issues. Dendias outlined the problems caused by a massive influx of migrants, especially in times of economic depression, and presented the current and future actions of the Greek government regarding refugee shelters and the granting of political asylum.
He further cited a draft presidential decree which foresees the establishment of a division in the Greek Police for dealing with racist violence. Answering questions by the MEPs, Dendias admitted there is still enough to be done concerning the appropriate management of illegal migration issues, adding that the country needs the full support and solidarity of EU member-states.
He also stressed that Greece's actions have been positively assessed by European Commissioner for migration issues, Cecilia Malmstrom, and by his EU counterparts at the recent Justice and Internal Affairs Council in Luxembourg on October 25-26. The LIBE delegation acknowledged the progress made by Greek authorities in tackling migration issues.
