In a joint declaration issued, the ministers reaffirmed their support for the European integration of the Western Balkans and their engagement in regional cooperation initiatives focusing on projects of common interest. At the press conference, Avramopoulos referred to the importance Greece attributes to the EU enlargement process, which will be the main issue of the agenda of the Greek EU Presidency on the first half of 2014.
After Sofia, Avramopoulos travelled to Cairo, to participate in the meeting of EU and Arab League Foreign Ministers, where 17 European ministers and 20 Arab ministers gathered to discuss Arab-European cooperation, the Syrian crisis, the Palestinian issue and latest developments in the so-called Arab Spring countries.
While in Cairo, Avramopoulos also met with the Patriarch of Alexandria, Theodoros, and representatives of the Greek communities of Cairo and Alexandria.
