The October 28th celebration in Thessaloniki coincides this year with the 100th anniversary of the city’s liberation from Ottoman rule and its incorporation together with the wider region of Macedonia and Epirus, and the islands of northern Aegean, into the modern Greek state. To mark the anniversary, the University of Misouri-St. Louis is hosting a conference on October 27, titled Greece and the Balkan Wars: 100 years from the liberation of Macedonia and Epirus.
The conference which is organised by the Modern Greek Studies programme of the University aims to both commemorate the anniversary and promote understanding of the historical event.
Distinguished historians from the US, Canada, and Greece will debate important issues of the Balkan Wars, such as the role of the army and navy in the wars, violence and ethnic cleansing, war and propaganda, and the role of Diaspora Greeks who returned to fight in the these wars. For those interested, the conference can be followed online at www.greekstudies.org.
