The ancient theatre of Thassos is to be restored using the island’s signature marbled, with the works already under way.

The ancient theatre of Thassos is built inside a natural cavity above the island’s port and offers spectacular  sea views. According to Hippocrates, it was built as early as the 5th century BC and was endowed with a marble front on its main parts.

The famous Thassos marble, considered one of the purest white stones on earth, will be used for its restoration, in order to reproduce its original appearance. The koilon (the auditorium), the parodoi (the side entrances between the scene and the spectators) and the scene will be dressed in marble under the new restoration. The restoration, estimated at € 1,8 million, will be financed by national and EU funds.
