The Ministry of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights announced yesterday (10.06) a new bill regulating cohabitation agreements in Greece, including couples of the same sex. Under previous legislation, which has led to Greece’s conviction by the Court of Human Rights, couples of the same sex could not enter into cohabitation agreements.

Apart from complying with the Court’s decision, the proposed legislation also reinforces the effects of a cohabitation agreement, acknowledging the fact that other relationships, apart from marriage, can create family ties, and recognizing rights such as alimony or division of property which has increased in value, following the dissolution of the agreement.
