They named themselves the Centaurus Racing Team in tribute to the mythical half-men, half-horse wild creatures roaming the region of Magnesia, Central Greece, seat of the Thessaly University team of twelve undergraduates who made it to the Formula Student Finals (July 28- August 2), Europe's most established educational motorsport competition, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The team from the University of Thessaly, Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 2009, as an opportunity to get involved with the design and the construction of a single-seater formula car and participate in the Formula SAE competition. It presented its new model Nessus R on June 16, in Volos, seat of the University.
