Since October 2009, Greece has been part of the International Network of Human Libraries around the world, with Human Library in Greece active in encouraging dialogue and interaction that would bring communities together. The "Human Library" is an innovative method that aims to challenge and break stereotypes, educate and finally mobilise against violence. The approach is simple yet positive, with dialogue as the tool of the trade in raising awareness and promoting tolerance and understanding across the many divides.

The Human Library came into being at a summer festival in Denmark almost fourteen years ago, and has since then expanded into a global network. It does not consist of actual books but of people willing to share their stories and experiences with others, in order to fight prejudice and promote diversity; a "mobile library" is set up as a space for dialogue and interaction, where visitors are given the opportunity to converse with a varied group of "people on loan," aided by "human dictionaries" (interpreters), in places accessible. The Council of Europe has been a supporter of the development and promotion of Human Library programs.
