  • The theme of "death" in Greco's paintings
2014 is a year of celebrations, commemorating El Greco’s 4th centenary of the painter’s death (1614). The Greek Museums pay their own tribute to Domenikos Theotokopoulos with a selection of exhibitions. The Athens based Museum of Cycladic Art hosts an exhibition focusing on the subject of death in the paintings of the old Cretan master. The central piece of this exhibition will be "The Entombment of Christ" of the National Gallery of Athens. The painting will be accompanied by two Pieta (Lamentation); the first one belongs to the collection of the Hispanic Society of America and the second one to a private collection. Both works will be exhibited digitally in almost actual size. The theme of death is a universal one, touching upon the human condition of death and immortality of the soul. The exhibition runs through February 15, 2015.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is also hosting a retrospective of the artist. The exhibition showcases ten paintings from the Metropolitan Museum and six from the Hispanic Society of America spanning El Greco’s entire career, from his arrival in Venice in 1567, through his move to Rome and his long residence in Toledo, Spain. The exhibition runs through February 1, 2015.
