Aquaculture technology is one of the areas where Europe has the edge over other areas in the world and can make a difference in the future; nevertheless, it faces environmental challenges and increasing competition from outside the EU.
The Greek archipelago offers excellent conditions for fishery operations: Greek waters are home to approximately 250 marine creatures, which makes Greece a country with a large tradition in quality fishery. Among the EU member states Greece, ranks first when it comes to the number of fishing vessels according to 2011 data. It is also one of the three countries (with Spain and Italy) that account for around 60% of employment in the salt-water fishing sector in the EU.
