Tired of the sameness, complexity and noise of modern tourism? A 300-year-old village-turned-hotel offers a retreat from the modern world so genuine that feels like time-travelling, Crete-style.

Aspros Potamos (meaning White River in Greek), was a Venetian-period village in south-east Crete that has been abandoned for decades.

In the late 1990s, the old villagers’ cottages have been transformed into a hotel. The restoration retained the settlement’s original structure and traditional architecture: the rooms are built from natural local stone and wood, furnished with wooden tables and bedrock sleeping platforms, decorated with traditional objects, lit with oil lamps and candles.

This eco-friendly complex uses only renewable energy sources-generated electricity that powers the houses’ fridges and light. This back-to-basics approach provides a marvelous experience of the unpretentious down-to-earth Cretan life in a place that fits perfectly with its environment.

Situated at the top of the impressive Pefki gorge, enjoying views of the Libyan Sea and endowed with tranquility and simplicity of another era, Aspros Potamos awaits those who truly want to get away from it all.
