The revamping project of Thessaloniki’s waterfront received a prestigious award at the World Congress of the International Union of Architects (UIA), held in early August. The waterfront project was the winner of the "Friendly Spaces, Accessible to All" contest, organized by the UIA Work Programme, "Architecture for All" on the occasion of the 25th UIA Congress held at Durban, South Africa.
The contest aims at recognizing and awarding projects that unite architectural quality and accessibility for all users. The newly refurbished waterfront, designed by local architectural duo Prodromos Nikiforidis and Bernard Cuomo, is a unified seaside promenade spanning a total of 5 km and featuring a total of 12 thematic parks. The concept of the design of this waterfront barrier between the city and the sea was a continuous linear space with sports, educational and cultural uses.
