The annual Armata Festival kicked off yesterday (September 8) on the island of Spetses and will run until September 14. The festival commemorates the victory of the naval forces of Spetses against the Ottoman fleet on September 8, 1822, a decisive moment for the Greek War of Independence, won thanks to the burning of the Turkish Flagship by a Spetsiote Captain.
The reenactment of this heroic act is the climax of the celebrations, with a model ship set on fire in front of the picturesque port of Spetses, followed by a spectacular firework display. Thousands of people from all over the world travel to Spetses for the week of cultural events and the fiery highlight of the weekend.
