A debate between the 5 candidates for the position of the next president of the European Commission took place yesterday in Brussels and was broadcast live by about 50 TV channels from around Europe and also streamed online.

Martin Schulz (Socialists), Jean-Claude Juncker (European People’s Party), Guy Verhofstadt (Liberals), Ska Keller (Greens) and Alexis Tsipras (European Left) faced 90 minutes of questions from Monica Maggioni of Italian broadcaster RAI.

SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras shared an anti-austerity message with European voters, arguing that austerity policies in the European Union were the main cause for the rise of nationalist and far-right parties.

On May 22–25, European voters will elect the new European Parliament and by doing this, they will also indicate who they want as the new president of the European Commission. The member states represented in the European Council must take the result of the European elections into consideration when proposing their candidate for Commission President, who will not be able to enter office wihout having being formally elected by the Parliament.
