One of the five largest telecoms giants worldwide, Chinese ZTE, and Cosco signed an agreement yesterday for the use of Piraeus Container Terminal as a logistics centre for the products of the Chinese company, covering its needs in the emerging markets of Eastern Europe and Russia. Operations commence today.

The agreement, signed in the presence of Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, initially provides for the creation of the logistics centre which will later be developed into a light manufacturing plant for the repair of products. ZTE also foresees an assembly line for the company’s telecom products. The agreement was reached during the premier’s visit to China in spring 2013 and was ratified with the visit of the Chinese company’s president to Greece.

ZTE products will be transited, through Piraeus Port, to 12 major markets in southeastern Europe and specifically to Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Cyprus. The Greek premier noted that Greece is completing strategic infrastructure projects that exploit synergies, promote investments, enhance entrepreneurship, create new jobs and improve the competitiveness of the country.
