The first waste compactor bin [in Greek] - with the capacity to hold as much waste as up to 40 conventional bins - was installed in Athens' Goudi district, on January 27. The project, which will place 20 similar bins throughout the city, seeks to address Athens’ chronic waste collection issues and is funded by the European Union through the National Strategic Reference Framework.

The bin, which occupies six square meters, can fit twenty cubic metres of compacted waste. It is equipped with a lifting device and is placed 3.5 metres under the ground, which ensures better hygiene and combats bad odours, especially during hot summer months. The bins operate by a remote control sensor that activates the sanitation operation when it’s full and needs emptying, therefore saving both time and money.
