After the first EU Intergovernental Conference with Serbia (January 21), Government Vice-president and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos – who chaired the first meeting - told journalists in Brussels that he welcomed the opening of Serbia’s EU accession negotiations, saying it was a historical moment.

On Syria, he noted that "we are at the end of a complex mission," which, barring any problems, could be concluded at the upcoming talks in Geneva, in a way that ensures the territorial integrity of the country and deals with humanitarian issues. Regarding the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons, Venizelos mentioned that their possible disposal in the Mediterranean is out of the question.

  • EU Parliament Elections Crucial to Constitutional Affairs
May’s European Parliament elections are very important to the debate on proposals and possible solutions for the European Union, Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Kourkoulas told the European Parliament Committee on Constitutional Affairs. The completion of talks on political party funding was a main priority for the Greek EU presidency, Kourkoulas told MEPs, during an exchange of views late last week in his capacity as President-in-Office of the Council.

MEPs asked Kourkoulas to brief them on the Greek EU presidency’s positions on immigration issues, free movement, information to citizens concerning the EuroParliament elections, EU political parties, negotiations on the Single Resolution Mechanism (SRM) for banks, the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI), and the evaluation of bailout measures taken by the EC-ECB-IMF troika of lenders.
