Thessaloniki celebrated the unveiling of its revamped waterfront, which was reopened to the public on December 1 by the city’s mayor, Yannis Boutaris. The newly refurbished waterfront forms a unified seaside promenade spanning a total of 5 km, from the city’s port to the Concert Hall, featuring a total of 12 thematic parks.

The first phase of the project was completed in 2008 with the construction of 5 thematic parks, while another 7 parks were presented yesterday: the Sculpture Garden, the Mediterranean Garden, the Garden of Phocas, the Garden of the Seasons, the Garden of Sand, the Garden of the Afternoon Sun and the Garden of Alexander. Yesterday’s celebration was the unofficial opening of the waterfront, while the official opening will take place in spring, under the auspices of "Thessaloniki, European Youth Capital, 2014."
