Maria Callas (Maria Kalogeropoulos, as was her full surname) was born in New York on December 2, 1923, and received her musical training in Athens. Callas’ gorgeous voice range and dramatic gifts rendered her one of the most influential opera singers of her time and the greatest opera diva of the 20th century.
