The monumental mural, The Cultivation of Tobacco by engraver Tassos (1914-1985) and his life partner Loukia Magiorou (1914-2008) will be on display at the State Museum of Contemporary Art in Thessaloniki from February 9 – March 17.

The painting that was recently restored by the National Gallery, was presented to the public in an event hosted by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, the SMCA, the National Gallery & Alexander Soutsos Museum and the Pavlos Melas Municipality on February 9.

The masterpiece was painted in 1960 to decorate the National Tobacco Organization factory in Western Thessaloniki and depicts the five stages in the production and cultivation of tobacco.

Inspired by Byzantine Art, with strong references to ancient Greek ceramic art, the work focuses on the hardships of manual labour and constitutes a hymn to human solidarity and cooperation.
