According to archaeologists, Iera Odos -meaning the 'Sacred Way'- was walked upon by most Athenians of antiquity. Now the dwellers and visitors of modern Athens have the opportunity to admire a large section of this historical landmark, excavated recently in the course of works for the city’s metro line.

While digging for the underground tunnel and the station of Egaleo, workers revealed important findings, including a section of the Sacred Way along with an adjacent ancient cemetery, which included eighteen fragmentary graves of different types, such as cist and tile graves, shaft graves and the bottom of three sarcophagi.

Parts of the Sacred Way had been unearthed in earlier rescue excavations, carried out during the widening of modern Iera Odos.

However, the recent excavations at Estavromenou Square, near the Egaleo metro station, uncovered the street's full width over a considerable distance as well as five successive street layers. Some of the findings were unveiled to the public in December, including the Estavromenou Square excavations and seven glass showcases in the Egaleo station; findings from the excavations provide commuters with a brief insight into the city’s rich history.
