The first ever Greek microsatellite is due to be launched from Cape Canaveral in the summer of 2013. Lamdasat (Λsat) is a microsatellite built by the Λ-Team, a group of 10 Greek researchers, led by Aerospace Engineering Professor at the University of California San Jose, Periklis Papadopoulos.

The satellite will stay in orbit for approximately 300 days and its objective is to monitor Greek merchant ships at risk from piracy, by developing up-link/down-link global communication capabilities with the ships.

The Λ-team (whose motto is "Greek minds at work") holds a broader mission: to provide expertise and deploy a mentors’ network within the Greek scientific community for young Greek scientists.
