The tangerine grown on the Aegean island of Chios -famous for its mastic and citrus production- has been added to the European Union's list of Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) products- raising the number of Greek products included in the EU Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) lists to ninety-seven.

The Chios tangerine belongs to the species Citrus deliciose tenore, which gives it special characteristics.

It has tender and delicious flesh, it boasts a strong aroma, and is considered  to be among the finest and the most aromatic in the world,  given that even unripened tangerines are fragrant.

Indeed, so strong is the fragrance emanating from their orchards, that the island has become known as "Myrovolos" (aroma exuding, in Greek) Chios.

The Agriculture ministry strives to gain PGI and PDO status for traditional products on a European level in order to protect and promote the diversity of Greek farming, giving thus added value to its products.
