June 5, 2012 marked 40 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Hellenic Republic and the People’s Republic of China. To celebrate this landmark date for Sino-Greek, a gamut of commemoratory events were planned in both countries, such as a joint philatelic publication to be circulated by the two countries’ postal services. The Greek Embassy in Beijing also organized a range of events, including a Greek cinema week (21-27.05.2012) and an exhibition on the life and work of Socrates and Lao Tzu (4-9.4.2012).
To honour the occasion, Hellenic Republic President Karolos Papoulias, Prime Minister Panagiotis Pikrammenos and Foreign Minister Petros Molyviatis sent congratulatory letters to their Chinese counterparts, outlining the importance of the strong ties that have developed between Greece and China during the course of history.
They specially alluded to the institutional aspect of the countries’ co-operation since the adoption of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2006. The same spirit was expressed in the letters sent by the President Hu Jintao, the Premier Wen Jiabao and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi to their respective Greek counterparts.
