Following the success of last year’s Matala Hippies Reunion, a three-day music festival was held by the legendary caves, on the island of Crete, on June 2-4, attracting about 50,000 visitors, double the number from last year.

Situated at the Bay of Messara, 75 kms from Heraklion, Matala beach is, according to ancient mythology, the place where Zeus in the guise of a bull swam ashore with Europa on his back.

The Matala Festival offers live music from the 60s and 70s and beach parties right in front the famous caves as well as all kind of activities like a hippie bazaar, happenings, exhibitions, a children’s fun park ... and much more! Local authorities are considering turning the event into an annual gathering for old and … not so old hippies or hippy-inspired people.
