World Environment Day -observed every year on June 5- is celebrated today with several events around Greece. The theme for this year’s events is Green Economy: Does it include you?, aiming to raise awareness for a greener environment.
According to the UN Environment Programme,  Green Economy results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. In its simplest expression, a green economy can be thought of as one which is low carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive.

Thessaloniki celebrates the day with a five-days "Green party" taking place from June 5 to 10 under the slogan: l live ecologically every day!. In addition, the Onassis Cultural Center hosts the Oikopolis 2012 Awards ceremony to honour actions and projects oriented towards environmental protection.

Greece was awarded the European Citizen’s Climate Cup for 2012, according to a press release issued on June 5.

The 2,845 Greek households which participated in the Pan European competition managed to reduce energy heating consumption by 6.16% and electricity energy consumption by 10.52%.

The European Citizen’s Climate Cup aims at promoting CO2 emissions reduction.

Participating householders were required to register for an "Energy Savings Account" (ESA) by logging on their National Climate Cup web page and regularly insert their energy bill data into the ESA.
  • A campaign to protect Greece's Natural Heritage
ARCTUROS and MOm, the Greek environmental NGOs for the protection of the Brown bear and the Mediterranean Monk Seal respectively, travelled to the US to relay the message of protection of wildlife and natural environment in Greece.

Dr. Alexandros Karamanlidis -field biologist and researcher for ARCTUROS and Mom- delivered speeches on the research work and the actions undertaken by the two NGOs for the protection of endangered wildlife species and Greece’s natural environment. YouTube: Give wildlife in Greece a chance [VIDEO]
