The green olives of Halkidiki have received Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status in the EU. Following an application in 2006, the olive variety of Halkidiki was included in the register of protected designations of origin and protected geographical indications on May 22. The Northern Greek peninsula produces large, oval-shaped, pale green olives of high nutritional value.

The olives are harvested young and brine-cured, and have a distinct slightly tart flavour. Due to their size they are often stuffed with dried peppers or tomatoes, almonds or cheese, and are very popular as an appetizer or snack.
