World renowned artist Jannis Kounellis returns to Greece for his first solo exhibition in many years.
Kounellis presents a site specific work at the Museum of Cycladic Art, which he considers his personal response to the economic and social crisis turmoil.
Using material found in the local Athenian markets and junkyards, the arte povera master creates symbols of hope, as well as a testimony to the city’s turbulent history and the personal journey of its residents.
Born in Piraeus, Kounellis moved to Rome in 1956 and became a major contributor to the radically and internationally influential Arte Povera group. His art carries anti-elitist connotations, featuring the use of unusual and antithetical material creating visceral "pictures" of an archaic world. The exhibition will run until September 30.
