European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion László Andor visited Athens on March 30 and held meetings with Labour and Social Security Minister, Yiorgos Koutroumanis, Development, Competitiveness and Shipping Minister Anna Diamantopoulou, as well as Administrative Reform and E-Governance Minister Dimitris Reppas.

Speaking at a press conference, Commissioner Andor praised the progress made by Greek authorities, particularly in the use of the European Social Fund (ESF) in 2011. He also stressed the need to "mobilise more effectively ESF resources to promote access to employment and new skills, while strengthening the role of social partners in the governance of policy reforms at all levels."

In addition, Andor noted that Greek authorities are currently discussing with the Commission on how to use remaining funds for 2012 and 2013 towards subduing youth unemployment, in the context of the Youth Opportunities Initiative.
