Prime Minister George Papandreou inaugurated the 75th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), on Saturday, September 11. Addressing an audience of entrepreneurs and politicians, who traditionally attend this event, the PM said that “this is a battle of survival for Greece. We either win or we all sink together,” he stressed.

He also sent a message of hope to the Greek people pledging major reforms that would change the country: among which, the establishment of a safety net for weaker social groups, radical restructuring of debt-ridden state enterprises, reform of the education system as well as a crackdown on tax evasion. He further promised to ease the tax burden on enterprises that reinvest their profits, and ruled out the possibility
 of debt restructuring.

Papandreou also indicated that there would be no new austerity measures as long as Greece continued to do well with respect to the targets set in the European financial support package. Speaking to reporters at the traditional press conference on the sidelines of the TIF, on Sunday (September 12), the PM said that process foreseen by the Memorandum on the European financial support package comes to an end in 2013 and the sooner the necessary reforms were made, the sooner Greece would be free of the restrictions set there.
