Among the attractions at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF), the Prime Minister visited the first solar energy tree in the world, which was “planted” at the TIF venue. This “green” tree is actually a pioneering streetlight which functions with solar receiver panels.

The branches of the solar tree are decorated with 10 solar lamps, each containing 36 solar cells, while a sensor measures the amount of light in the atmosphere and triggers the solar lamps to go on automatically at sunset and off at sunrise. This revolutionary urban lighting project, which has been designed by world-renowned industrial designer Ross Lovegrove, will be commercially available as of October 2010.
