At a distance of one nautical mile northeast of the Cycladic island of Kimolos lies the island of Polyaigos.

Although the island is known as the largest uninhabited landmass in the Mediterranean, it has a large population of goats - hence its name: "poly + aigos (goats)" - as well as a couple of farmers.

A well-hidden secret for most travelers, it is mostly known to conservationists, keen on the protection of the Mediterranean monk seal, Monachus monachus, which reproduces in the island’s numerous sea caves.

A growing number of boat owners visit its wildly beautiful coastline, superb beaches and crystal-clear waters. Polyaigos is a Natura 2000-protected area and home to a number of rare reptile, bird and plant species.
